According to the HHS Privacy Rule, HIPAA training is required for “each new member of the workforce within a reasonable period of time after the person joins the Covered Entity’s workforce” and also when “functions are affected by a material change in polies or procedures”, again within a reasonable period of time.
According to the Security Rule, HIPAA training is required “periodically”. Most healthcare providers
interpret “periodically” as annually, since a longer period might constitute a negligent attitude toward
training in the case of an investigation into a breach. It is a best practice to provide HIPAA refresher
training annually.
